Dr. Zotovich understands the delicate emotional needs of children to maintain a positive relationship with the dentist. When dental problems require treatment to renew oral health, we offer sedation options that include nitrous oxide, conscious sedation (a safe, non-narcotic oral sedative) and I.V. general anesthesia.
Understanding Children’s Dental Sedation
Intravenous Anesthesia - Commonly known as I.V. sedation, intravenous anesthesia provides a way of effectively completing dental care while your child is asleep. Most children respond well to nitrous oxide and/or an oral sedative. However, children with severe anxiety and/or the inability to relax are candidates for intravenous anesthesia. Usually, these children are very young, anxious or are special needs children.
The use of I.V. sedation allows Dr. Zotovich to complete many dental visits in just one appointment, without fear and discomfort. Your child will fall asleep in your arms and wake up in your arms. As a result, your child may look forward to future dental visits!
Nitrous Oxide - Often referred to as happy air, nitrous oxide is an inhalant that relaxes your child while remaining awake. Your child will remain alert and can cooperate with our San Jose sedation dentist. Nitrous oxide is flushed out of your child’s system with pure oxygen within minutes of completing the procedure. There are no residual side effects.Oral Sedation – A sedation method in oral form, we will give your child the oral sedative in our office. During the procedure, children may fall asleep or remain in a relaxed state and may have no memory of the procedure. Patients may go home and sleep away any of the residual sedation effects.
