How it Works

What is Pediatric Sedation Dentistry?

At Pediatric Dentistry of San Jose, we understand that dental visits can be challenging for some children. That’s why we offer pediatric sedation dentistry, which involves the use of medication to help children relax and remain still during dental procedures. The level of sedation can vary from minimal sedation (relaxed and awake) to deep sedation (almost unconscious), depending on the child’s needs and the complexity of the procedure.

Our experienced pediatric dentists will carefully evaluate your child’s medical history and dental needs to determine the most appropriate type of sedation for their individual case. Your child’s safety and comfort are our top priorities at Pediatric Dentistry of San Jose.

Types of Sedation Procedures

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a mask placed over the child’s nose. It is mild and helps children relax during dental procedures. The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed.
  • Oral Sedation: Oral sedation involves the administration of a prescribed medication by mouth before the dental procedure. This medication helps children relax and may make them feel drowsy. It is important to follow the dentist’s instructions regarding fasting before the procedure.
  • Intravenous (IV) Sedation: IV sedation involves the administration of sedative medication through a vein, allowing the dentist to adjust the level of sedation as needed. This type of sedation is typically used for more complex procedures or for children with severe anxiety.
  • General Anesthesia: General anesthesia is a deep state of sedation where the child is unconscious and unaware of the procedure. It is usually reserved for very young children, those with special needs, or for extensive dental procedures.
