How it Works

Orthodontist

Finding the right orthodontist for a child is about more than straightening teeth. Because kids are still growing, timing can play an important role in guiding jaw development, improving bite issues, and making future treatment less complicated. For Evergreen families, having that kind of care close to home can make the process easier to start and easier to stick with.

Pediatric Dentistry of San Jose offers orthodontic care for Evergreen families through our on-site orthodontist, Dr. Hollander. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics with advanced training from UCLA and published research in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Our team has cared for East San Jose families for more than 40 years, and we are proud to bring that same trusted, specialized care to patients from Evergreen.

What Orthodontic Treatment Looks Like for Children

Orthodontic treatment for children covers a wider range of concerns than most parents initially expect. Beyond straightening teeth, pediatric orthodontics addresses jaw development, bite formation, and the potential of early intervention to prevent more significant problems later. When a child is evaluated at the right time, a provider can identify issues that are far simpler to address while the jaw and facial bones are still growing than once growth is complete.

A 2022 study published by NIH’s PubMed Central found that a significant portion of parents are unaware of when their child should first see an orthodontist, which can delay intervention during the most effective treatment window. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age seven, when enough permanent teeth have come in to allow a provider to identify developing alignment or bite concerns early.

How It Helps

When to Schedule Your Child's First Orthodontic Evaluation

Parents often wonder when their child should first see an orthodontist, and the answer is usually earlier than they expect. An evaluation around age seven does not mean your child is starting treatment right away. Most of the time, it simply gives Dr. Hollander a chance to see how their teeth and jaw are developing and to decide whether anything should be monitored as they grow. For many children, that first visit ends with a plan to check in from time to time while growth continues naturally.

There are some cases where it makes sense to come in sooner. Signs like a crossbite, noticeable crowding, front teeth that stick out, trouble chewing, or habits like prolonged thumb sucking may point to issues that are easier to address early. When treatment is needed at the right time, it can sometimes make future care simpler and help avoid more involved treatment later.

The Services We Offer at Our Evergreen Location

Our orthodontic services are designed to meet children and teens where they are developmentally, from early interceptive care through comprehensive treatment. We offer a full range of orthodontic options, and our approach is always individualized to each patient’s needs rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol. The following are the primary treatment options we provide:

  • Early interceptive orthodontics: Appliances and guidance during the mixed dentition phase to correct bite problems, crossbites, and jaw discrepancies before they become structural issues
  • Traditional braces: Time-tested fixed appliances for comprehensive tooth alignment and bite correction in older children and teens
  • Clear aligners: A removable alternative to braces for patients whose cases are well-suited to aligner-based treatment
  • Palate expanders: Devices that widen the upper jaw to create space and address crowding or crossbite concerns during active growth

Each treatment plan begins with a thorough evaluation, and we walk families through every option before making any recommendation. Our early orthodontics page provides additional detail on interceptive care for younger patients.

What to Expect During an Orthodontic Evaluation

An orthodontic evaluation at Pediatric Dentistry of San Jose is detailed but not complicated. Dr. Hollander looks at how your child’s teeth and jaw are developing, how their bite is coming together, and if any concerns should be watched or treated. For many children, the best next step is simply to keep an eye on things with periodic check-ins. That can be just as helpful as starting treatment right away because it gives us a clear way to track growth and catch changes early.

For families whose children are already in active treatment or who have been referred by another provider, we welcome transfer patients and work to make the transition as seamless as possible. Our team coordinates closely with our pediatric dental providers so that orthodontic and general dental care are always aligned. Routine pediatric exams and cleanings remain an important part of maintaining oral health throughout orthodontic treatment, and we make it easy to manage both under one roof.
