While most children don’t need general or IV sedation for their dental visit, there are many benefits that even light sedation can offer. For children who suffer from dental anxiety or have difficulty cooperating during a procedure, sedation may be required for treatment to be administered and the child’s smile to be cared for.
Sedation Dental Appointments – Before Your Child’s Visit
The following information is provided to help parents prepare their child for his or her sedation dental appointment.
Health and Wellness:
Tell us about any medications your child is taking whether it is herbal, over-the-counter, or prescribed, as well as any known allergies to medicine.
Notify our office of any existing health concerns such as fever, ear infection, runny nose, congestion, or recent head trauma. The sedation appointment may need to be re-scheduled to avoid an increased risk of complications.
Food and Drink:
Food and beverage intake must be restricted prior to sedation as fasting decreases the risk of vomiting and choking.
- Discontinue meats and fried or fatty foods eight hours before the appointment.
- Milk, formula, and light meals should not be ingested less than six hours prior.
- Clear liquids like water, fruit juice without pulp, carbonated beverages, and tea can be consumed up to two hours before sedation.
Clothing Choices
Dress your child in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. This will allow us to place a sensor that monitors your child’s response to the medications (breathing, heart rate, etc.) and help ensure your child’s safety.
If possible, don’t bring other children to the appointment so you can keep your attention on the patient.
When You Arrive at Our Location
Parents play a vital role in their children’s dental care. Kids can perceive a parent’s anxiety which makes them more fearful. When the responsible adult is relaxed and has a good understanding of their child’s procedure and what to expect, they can more effectively put their child’s mind at ease.
If you have any questions about the sedation process, we are happy to provide answers – Just ask! When you are confident, your child has a better chance of remaining calm.
